As a person who has dedicated her life to studying languages, I know exactly what it takes to learn a language (any language!) well. I speak 5 languages and with all 5 of them I had to invest great time and effort in studying the vocabulary and grammar —a very much needed step, no doubt about that. However, by simply studying and passing the tests I didn't get to actually SPEAK those languages. The first language I learned —other than my mother tongue, obviously— was French. The process in this case was relatively simple. Since my parents enrolled me in a bilingual French-Spanish school at the young age of 3, I didn't have more difficulty learning French than I had understanding the Spanish grammar. Most of the teachers at our school were French native speakers and the vehicle language was French as much as it was Spanish. With English, the story was a bit different. Years of studying the language at school and in academies as an extracurricular activity didn't give any results until my parents decided to send me abroad so that I could put into practice what I was learning at school. But still, that wasn't IT. I could still not speak English in a fluent and confident way. At 15 I already knew that languages were a passion of mine, and so at 18 I made the decision to study Translation & Interpretation simply because I wanted to excel in as many languages as possible. I became a professional translator and interpreter in both English and French, and studied Japanese as a third language. Years later I decided to perfect my level of Japanese and that's how I ended up living in Tokyo for almost 2 years. After my abrupt departure from the country (the earthquake in 2011 caught me at Narita airport), I spent 4 years in Korea working at an international startup first, and later studying Korean while teaching English and Spanish to employees at Daewoo and Samsung, as well as teenagers who were preparing to enter university. Korean is a language that I use on a daily basis with my partner —like English— and that I also teach, by the way. But as I said, my experience living abroad was not what made me a fluent English and Korean speaker. What truly made the difference was… What I discovered was the true way of learning a language, ANY language. Want to know more? Keep on reading! EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AS A TEACHER I have a double degree in Translation and Interpretation (Universidad Pontificia Comillas, Madrid) and Communication and Media (San Pablo CEU, Madrid). After several years working as an audiovisual translator, I found myself at a crossroads where I wanted to travel, step out of my comfort zone and experience life at its full. My first job as a teacher happened while living in a foreign country (Korea). It started as a favor to a friend's friend and ended up becoming my vocation, what I truly enjoy doing. That was back in 2012 and I haven't stopped teaching since! In Korea I worked as a teacher of both English and Spanish for company employees (group classes), company executives (1 : 1) and I also gave private lessons to teenagers. Here in Spain, I worked in several academies teaching English and Spanish offline and online, and for 2 years I even taught Korean to several groups of students aged between 14 to 21 years-old. I've been working as a language teacher for the past 10 years, which I can summarize like this: - Experience teaching English (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, Cambridge exams prep), Spanish (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, DELE exams prep) and Korean (A1, A2, B1, B2) - Students from 4 to +70 years of age. - Students from different nationalities. In my classes I've used Spanish, English, Japanese, French and Korean to communicate with some of my students. - Classes at schools, companies, language academies and private lessons. Online lessons since 2018 (and I must say that I'm so comfortable teaching this way that at present I work mostly through a webcam).
