Acerca de Carlos A
I’m Carlos, a language teacher, writer and professional translator originally from Los Angeles and based in Barcelona since 2011.
I’m bilingual in English and Spanish and speak Catalan at a native level. Having learned and used Catalan myself in a multilingual environment, I understand many of the questions and challenges English-speaking learners face, especially when they already speak some Spanish.
I have more than 10 years of experience in teaching, languages and writing. I hold an MFA in Writing from the University of San Francisco and a BA in English Literature from UCLA, and I’ve taught languages, literature and creative writing in both academic and private settings.
My professional work as a writer, translator and language specialist has also given me a strong understanding of grammar, vocabulary, register and how languages work in real-life contexts. I enjoy helping students make those connections and become more confident using the language outside the classroom.
My teaching style is clear, practical and supportive. I adapt lessons to each student’s goals rather than following exactly the same program for everyone.

Perhaps you hear Catalan every day but don't feel confident using it yourself. Maybe you already speak some Spanish and find yourself mixing the two languages. Or perhaps you've lived here for a while and feel that learning Catalan would help you participate more fully in everyday life.
I offer personalised Catalan classes for English-speaking adults, from complete beginners to more advanced learners, both online and in person in Barcelona.
I'm Carlos, a language teacher, writer and professional translator. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and have lived in Barcelona since 2011. I'm bilingual in English and Spanish and speak Catalan at a professional level.
Because I've learned and used Catalan myself in a multilingual environment, I understand many of the difficulties English-speaking learners encounter — particularly those who already speak some Spanish.
How my Catalan classes work
My approach is practical and communicative. I want you to understand how Catalan works, but also to start actually using it.
Depending on your level and goals, we can work on:
• Catalan for complete beginners
• everyday conversation and speaking confidence
• pronunciation and listening comprehension
• grammar explained clearly in English
• practical vocabulary for life in Catalonia
• natural expressions and everyday Catalan
• differences between Catalan, Spanish and English
• avoiding common interference from Spanish

• Catalan for work and professional situations
Lessons are structured, but they aren't rigid. I adapt the material to your progress, interests and the situations in which you actually need to use Catalan.
Catalan for everyday life in Barcelona and Catalonia
If you live here, we can work with situations you encounter in real life: conversations with neighbours and colleagues, appointments, shops and restaurants, housing, local services, social situations and understanding the Catalan you see and hear around you.
The aim is not simply to memorise grammar rules. It's to make Catalan useful to you from the beginning.
Already speak Spanish?
That's an advantage.
Spanish can help you make very rapid progress in Catalan because the two languages share many structures and words. But it can also create confusion with pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar.
I'll help you recognise the similarities that make Catalan easier while identifying the differences you need to pay attention to.
Because I work professionally across several languages, I particularly enjoy explaining these connections and helping students understand why languages work the way they do.
Authentic Catalan, not just textbook exercises
For intermediate and advanced learners, I also use authentic materials such as articles, videos, podcasts, short texts and other real-world content.
This allows us to work with Catalan as it is actually spoken and written rather than relying exclusively on textbook language.
Catalan for professionals
If you need Catalan for your job, lessons can also focus on professional situations such as conversations with colleagues, meetings, written communication, presentations and vocabulary related to your field.

Como también habla español a nivel nativo, explica muy bien la gramática, la pronunciación y los errores que solemos cometer los hispanohablantes. He ganado mucha fluidez y confianza al hablar inglés. Lo recomiendo totalmente para clases de inglés para adultos, conversación y Business English.
I took Spanish (and Catalan) classes with Carlos after moving to Barcelona and wanted to feel more confident speaking in everyday situations. He explains Spanish very clearly in English and understands the typical mistakes English speakers make. We worked on conversation, grammar, pronunciation and practical Spanish for living in Spain. Carlos is an excellent native English teacher in Barcelona. I wanted to improve my spoken English for work, especially meetings, presentations and professional communication.
